A message from VCC president, Ajay Patel

The passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on September 8, 2022 has caused many to pause and reflect on the life of a remarkable woman. And in many ways, it feels like the end of an era.

Canada鈥檚 relationship to the monarchy has a different meaning and impact on each of us. What is undeniable however, was Her Majesty鈥檚 unwavering commitment to service and duty to her country during times of war and times of peace. For over seventy years, in a world of constant change, she remained the epitome of 鈥淜eep Calm and Carry On.鈥

On September 13, 2022, Prime Minister Trudeau announced that Monday, September 19, 2022, will also be a holiday for federal government employees to mourn Queen Elizabeth II on the day of her state funeral.

The provincial government has also announced today 鈥渁ll B.C. public sector employers should plan for September 19 to also be observed as a holiday, for employees who are normally entitled to provincial and federal statutory holidays.鈥

VCC will be observing the holiday on September 19 consistent with the broader public sector. This means that classes are cancelled, and the college will be closed.

For more information, please see the statement posted by the

As per federal protocol, VCC has lowered its campus flags, and they will remain lowered until September 19.

Commemorative ceremonies will be held in Ottawa and Victoria on September 19 and will be televised.

On behalf of VCC, I send my deepest condolences to the peoples of the United Kingdom who have lost their stalwart Queen 鈥 she was truly a remarkable person.
